We believe that belief is not merely a cognitive exercise of thought as it is also an action of lifestyle that reflects our trust. As United Methodists, we follow in the long line of dialog within a framework, noted by St. Augustine (354-430 AD) as, “in essentials, unity—in non-essentials liberty–in all things love.” As a denomination with its beginnings in a reformation movement within the Church of England, we employ for as the resources for our theological task what has been referred to as the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral.” Wesley added a fourth emphasis, “experience”, to his Anglican tradition’s triad of authoritative resources. The resulting four components or "sides" of the quadrilateral are: - Scripture
- Tradition
- Reason
- Experience
For United Methodists, Scripture is considered the primary source and standard for Christian doctrine. Tradition is experience and the witness of development and growth of the faith through the past centuries and in many nations and cultures. Experience is the individual's understanding and appropriating of the faith in the light of his or her own life. Through reason the individual Christian brings to bear on the Christian faith discerning and cogent thought. These four elements taken together bring the individual Christian to a mature and fulfilling understanding of the Christian faith and the required response of worship and service. As a Protestant denomination, we hold to the primacy of God’s unconditional love (which has traditionally referred to as “grace”) that works within the human family (individually and corporately) to bring about transformation (traditionally named “conversion” or “justification” and “sanctification”) that each would be (what Wesley noted as “perfected in love”) truly and wholly human, as God intended and continues to redeem humanity to be. While God’s gift of unconditional love is always primary, there is a “synergy” of the person and world community where an acceptance and working with God’s “grace” is the called for response. In response, therefore, the person and global family grows and deepens in a relationship with God that brings about both the volition and actions that make for justice and peace.
